Martha's Vineyard, New England's largest resort island, lies seven miles off the coast of Cape Cod. The Island is roughly triangular-shaped; the total land area is approximately 100 square miles. There are six towns on Martha's Vineyard; three up-island towns, Aquinnah (formerly known as Gay Head), Chilmark, and West Tisbury; and three down-island towns, Vineyard Haven (also known as Tisbury), Oak Bluffs and Edgartown.
Island property taxes are determined by multiplying the property value (assessed value is determined by the tax assessor) times the MIL rate established by the town. Here are current MIL rates by town:
Aquinnah - $ 3.86 (2011)
Chilmark - $ 2.13 (2011)
Edgartown - $ 3.40 (2011)
Oak Bluffs - $ 7.39 (2012)
Tisbury - $ 8.01 (2012)*

* Tisbury commercial MIL rate for 2012 is $7.44.
