Most brunches offer some standard fare – Bloody Mary’s, omelettes, muffins, etc., but at Not Your Sugar Mamas’ Cafe & Market on Martha’s Vineyard in Vineyard Haven, you’ll find quite the different — healthy — menu for brunch.
I met with Not Your Sugar Mamas general manager, Andrea Peraino , who was definitely excited about all the happenings at the cafe, including the very popular brunch.
Not Your Sugar Mamas offers a plant-based brunch, on Sundays, packed with healthy options that are so good, you don’t feel like you’re missing out on anything. Vegan, dairy-free, gluten-free — the menu is chock full of choices.
If you have a sweet tooth, try the doughnuts. With options like chocolate glazed, pumpkin spice and maple walnut, you’re sure to be satisfied. The recipes are so good, your mind may forget that you’re actually eating something so good for you, natural ingredients, all plant-based. It’s crazy!
Don’t forget about the paleo waffles too — the coconut whipped cream is so dreamy. I wish this could be found in Not Your Sugar Mama’s takeaway case. I would eat this every day. I bet it’s fantastic in coffee!
Also, you’ll find an impressive selection of smoothies and “milkshakes.” I tried the Salted Caramel with housemade cashew milk, dates, vanilla, sea salt, almond butter and housemade caramel. It is so good
A: it can be a meal in itself; B: I felt like I was having a super delicious milkshake, but the added bonus of not having negative side effects (dairy is not my friend). I have to admit that I actually went back the day after I went to research the brunch for another one of these for lunch.
If sweet is not your thing, there are a number of other options. There are gluten-free bagels, freshly baked daily, that can be topped with lots of options.
One of the most popular brunch items is the Baked Avocado & Kale Florentine. It’s a fresh baked, gluten-free bread with baked avocado, kale, vegan hollandaise, and NYSM bread crumbs. It is not only beautiful but keeps people coming back each week.
There are also a number of flatbread choices too. I had the flatbread with avocado, arugula, and cashew parmesan. So good! The flavors worked well, and it was really satisfying, like eating a flatbread concoction from a restaurant, but 100% healthy.
Don’t forget to add a fresh juice to your meal or to take away! The juices here are an easy way to treat your body to something good. NYSM is still offering its juice cleanse monthly. Might be time for another one. I really liked this cleanse, to find out more, click here.
If you’ve noticed some changes in the menu, it might be because NYSM has a new chef, Tanya Chipperfield. She and her husband own Wolf’s Den. You might ask why she’s in this kitchen. Well, a vegan herself, she is able to share her passion for good plant-based food. She has fun with the food and is constantly challenging herself to create truly delicious plant-based food.
Over the next couple of weeks, NYSM will have themed dinners, including Indian and Thai – all plant-based!
When you’re done with brunch, be sure to grab some NYSM staples like almond feta, a tasty dip or two, coconut bacon, a chocolate bar, and maybe even the new NYSM cookbook!
Brunch at Not Your Sugar Mamas is from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. on Sundays. Note, this is the only time you can get the doughnuts! Also, there will be modifications made to the brunch menu.
It’s nice to have an alternative on Sundays. Don’t get me wrong, I love a good traditional brunch, but it’s nice to have the option to go healthy, especially this time of year. Having Not Your Sugar Mamas as an option every day is a good thing!
