WE LOVE MV: What To Do Memorial Day Weekend on Martha’s Vineyard

It’s the unofficial kick off to the Summer. Memorial Day Weekend is here. While not everything is open for business yet nor is it business as usual, don’t let that stop you — there are so many ways to enjoy Martha’s Vineyard on this iconic weekend. We’re highlighting local businesses and the Vineyard lifestyle in our new support-the-island drive we’re calling We Love MV:  MEMORIAL DAY WEEKEND.

WE LOVE MV: Memorial Day Weekend – The Great Island Takeout

Part of the weekend is visiting your favorite restaurants and you still can with many. However, this year takeout is king. Order online or over the phone for breakfast, lunch or dinner, and choose an idyllic dining spot like your favorite beach or Ocean Park in Oak Bluffs.

There are so many ways to enjoy great island-made food in the comfort of wherever you want. I can think of at least 10 things I would love to eat over the weekend from various places. Dining out on Martha’s Vineyard is not canceled.

WE LOVE MV: Memorial Day Weekend – Take a Hike or a Bike

We are supposed to have incredible weather for the weekend making it the perfect time to explore the bounty of trails found on the Martha’s Vineyard. Definitely download the TRAILS MV app on your phone. With TRAILS MV, you can easily access information on all The Trustees, Landbank, and Sheriff’s Meadow properties.

You will also find lots of great biking trails, like the one along State Beach or Katama or the State Forest. Don’t have a bike? Wheel Happy Bikes or Edgartown Bicycle are great rental shop alternatives.

WE LOVE MV: Memorial Day Weekend – Get On The Water

The water may be chilly (for some), it is so beautiful this time of year — the greens, the blues, it’s so clear. Why not rent a kayak or paddleboard from Island Spirit Kayak. It’s the ultimate way to social distance with a view, and they will deliver kayaks to your door!

If you’re looking for a more offshore experience, Island Girl Excursions might be a good option. A chartered sail around part of the island would be a great way to make the weekend memorable.

Perhaps you are more of a beach person. Beaches across the state, and here on the island, are now officially opening for the season this weekend. You can get an OSV (over sand vehicle) permit from the Trustees and take your SUV/truck on the sand at Chappy and/or Norton Point. Pack all your favorite beach accessories, coolers, and of course takeout from your favorite restaurant, and hit the beach tailgate style!

Please note that many beaches have posted social distance guidelines. Have your masks with you just in case it is challenging to social distance. For example, when to walking Lambert’s Cove Beach, you will have to walk single file and with a mask.

WE LOVE MV: Memorial Day Weekend – Simple Pleasures

After a day of fun, grab a deck of cards or a board game and play the night away. There is something about being on vacation that makes a game of cards so much more enjoyable. Grab Clue, Scrabble, Monopoly, Uno, whatever is your favorite, and share some friendly competition.

WE LOVE MV: Memorial Day Weekend – UNPLUG

We don’t know about you, but there has been a lot of screen time in our lives. From work, to school, to scrolling through social media, it seems like it’s constant. While on island, unplug, take a break if you can from it all. Grab a book, an extra cup of coffee, stay up and talk a little later. Connect in a way that can only happen when on Martha’s Vineyard.
