With work, children, and all our endless responsibilites, it is important to take some time to savor this very special time of year. We are all so busy, even more busy with preparation for the holidays, but as I find my “to do” list dwindling, I can pick up the subtle nuances of the holiday season.
This time of year, I love living on Martha’s Vineyard. Of course the Island is beautiful and each town has its own special holiday magic, but what I really love is how the mundane becomes fabulous. Going to the Post Office is an adventure, complete with a minimum of a half hour social visit with friends who have been in a mini-hiberbation.
Everywhere you go, you hear the familar “Merry Christmas” greeting among friends and just about everyone else, since we are all neighbors in this small community. You can see the joy on people’s faces, but of course you will find a couple of frantic last minute shoppers who might be a little more similar to the Grinch.
Sometimes I forget how fortuante I am to be a part of such a special place. Now that I have a family of my own I can really appreciate the magic of Christmas, and how different it is for me especially living here. I love this holiday, this place, and my friends and family. How wonderful to be able to take a moment to realize this, and embrace the true meaning of Christmas.
I wish everyone a joyous holiday, safe travels, happy memories, and a moment to really enjoy the spirit of Christmas.
