Martha's Vineyard Farm And Food - Experience The Magic Of The Beetlebung Farm Stand

In November of 2024 something magical began happening on Middle Road in Chilmark. Beetlebung Farm opened its new farm stand. New to us, but the actual building was salvaged from a farm in New England. This new space is not only visually stunning -- so full of bright veggies, curated provisions, baked goods and plants -- but it also serves a very important purpose. We're calling this update our Martha's Vineyard Farm And Food - Experience The Magic Of The Beetlebung Farm Stand

At Beetlebung Farm, they work to celebrate farms, farming and farmers in everything that they do. The way they source and stock the farm stand is a reflection of the way the staff and farmers like to eat. You'll find items that you would find in their fridges, pantries and on their kitchen tables. The season's bounty is represented throughout the stand serving as a guidance for what to eat. With these seasonal offerings, it is their goal to help nourish you through thoughtfully grown produce, farm driven grab and go, whole grain breads made from their mill and bakery, and a curated selection of pantry items to compliment the produce, dairy, meat, and fish that are sourced from the Island.

Martha's Vineyard Farm And Food - Experience The Magic Of The Beetlebung Farm Stand - Enjoying The Farm Stand

Beetlebung Farm is a 6+ acre farm in the heart of Chilmark. The farm grows veggies, herbs, flowers and berries on the 1+ acre of cultivated properties and greenhouses. The farm itself, bursting with summer bounty this time of year, is beautiful to walk around. Not only is it so lovely to visit, but it is special to witness a working farm. Since the farm stand is stocked with so much summer goodness, you can't help but want to check out every item offered at the stand. It's a feast for all the senses.

The farm stand carries whatever is currently growing on the farm. Cucumbers, radishes, squash, beets, herbs, escarole, flowers, onions, fennel, cherry tomatoes and more. Each week the offerings vary depending on what is harvested. That's why you need to visit often -- each visit is unique in its offerings.

In addition to all the farm products, you'll find a curated selection of edible provisions - dips, sauces, dressings, and other pantry items like olive oils and vinegars. You will also find locally made goods like Merry Farm Pottery and Flat Point Farm soaps, and it's the only place to find Salt Rock Chocolates outside of the West Tisbury Farmer's Market. Kate, the farm manager, carefully selects every item carried, ensuring that it is on mission with supporting local businesses and farms.

Martha's Vineyard Farm And Food - Experience The Magic Of The Beetlebung Farm Stand - The Bakery

Let's talk about the bakery at Beetlebung. The crew is in love with grain. They a have a mill that is used to grind grain into flour, and the bakery is an "unsifted" bakery. This means that once the grain is milled, they do not sift anything off the flour. This is not common practice, to be 100% unsifted, but the farm feels that this represents the grain as a farm-centric agricultural product. Using a mill allows the nutrients in the plant to be shared in its most concentrated form. Not sifting means that each loaf of their bread, pasta and pastries (even cookies) are 100% whole grain offering a more flavorful and nutritious product. This style allows for a truly special experience with each bakery item you get from Beetlebung Farm.

When I stopped by, I got a Fougasse. This is a flatbread from Provence and is the equivalent of Italian focaccia. I had never had one, but everyone was buying. I got the last one. It smelled so amazing. You could smell the herbs and seasoning. I decided it would be the perfect addition for a dinner party I was going to later that day. Mara, who works at the Farm, suggested I pair it with their Carrot Muhammara dip. I can tell you that it was the hit of the appetizers. I loved watching people break it apart and top it with the spread and revel in the robust flavors.

You can find out weekly bread offerings, veggies and more by signing up for Beetlebung's Weekly Dig, click here. I highly recommend signing up. It's good to be in the know. You can also see what the lunch specials are for the week. I definitely need to head back up for lunch from the farm kitchen.

For the summer season, Beetlebung is open Wednesday - Monday, 8 AM - 7 PM, closed on Tuesdays. However, hours can vary. For the best selection of baked goods and flowers, I recommend stopping by earlier in the day. The farm stand is quite busy and is an Up-Island hub. It's become a big part of the community.

Martha's Vineyard Farm And Food - Experience The Magic Of The Beetlebung Farm Stand - Summer Tasting Classes

In addition to all the great things the farm stand offers, there are Grain and Veggie Variety Tasting Classes on the farm. The classes give guests the chance to learn about the different varieties and processes of farm produced products. A cucumber tasting class sounds really good to me! Check out the offerings here, Summer Tasting Classes.

This summer, stop by Beetlebung Farm -- often. I hope that when you walk through the doors you are as inspired and left in awe of what they do and offer. It is a very special addition to the farm community that we can experience. In the fall, I hope to do a follow-up blog and talk more in-depth about what the farm does. Oh and I want to sit by the fireplace and drink coffee too. Something to look forward when summer leaves us.

Beetlebung Farm is located at 410 Middle Road, Chilmark, close to the Yard.
