La Gata Grande - The Pop-Up You've Been Waiting For

Do you remember El Gato Grande, Chef Spring Sheldon's Mexican Food Truck? If you do, then you remember its amazing Mexican food (loved the fried Cottage City Oysters tacos). It was a favorite of mine, and I miss it still!

There is something so special about Spring's Mexican food, and it's this style of food that brings her the most joy to bring to the table. Recently, Spring has been feeling nostalgic about El Gato, missing the food and the fun. Welcome La Gata Grande - it's the evolution of El Gato Grande which was inspired by her cat Pedro. Now it's the 2025 version and inspired by her female cate Princess Leah, AKA the General.

Spring has brought back her Oaxacan inspired menu and with it comes all the rich flavors and bright colorful food that brings her so much joy to make. This Winter, S & S Kitchenette is featuring an elongated pop-up, La Gata Grande.

The menu is bursting with scrumptious Mexican options. From enchiladas to tacos to al pastor, from daily tamales specials to pozole to creamed street corn and more — La Gata Grande offers a selection unlike any other restaurant on Martha’s Vineyard.

When we went to S & S Kitchenette, I asked Spring to do the ordering for me -choosing her favorites on the menu. She chose the Grilled Carrots with mole rojo, cotija cheese and pumpkin seeds, the Housemade Guac with Chips and the Beef Birria Tacos - slow cooked beet, queso, flour tortillas, served with an avocado- habanero creama and pickled onion.

What a stunning display of food, a feast for the eyes. Even with two of us, it was more than we could eat. Everything was so fresh and flavorful. Really good guac is one of my favorite things to eat, and La Gata's was really good. And the tacos, well they are a Spring Sheldon specialty that are so good. The carrots had a fun Mexican twist wit the mole and cotija cheese. It's nice to have something so different for dinner. La Gata Grande is a must for all foodies.

In addition to the food menu, the talented and well-known island bartender, Jeremy Provost (aka MV Bartender), has crafted a dedicated cocktail and mocktail menu to elevate the experience at S & S Kitchenette. Jeremy has a knack for creating memorable drinks with unique flavor combinations.

For the collaboration with La Gata Grande, he’s brought forward the “Oaxac-Tails & Dreams” collection — a lineup of fresh mixers and Mexican-inspired drinks that pair beautifully with the food. I ordered the Pelirroja (Redhead) Martini — gin, hibiscus, lemon, passion fruit and agave. What a gorgeous, bright, flavorful cocktail! It was truly lovely to sip. Taking it all in — the drink, the restaurant space, the ambiance — made for a great moment in the night.

Sense Of Space

It’s not just Spring’s food that draws people in — it’s the space, too. When you walk in, you’re greeted by a warm, welcoming and eclectic atmosphere. There is something to discover in every corner - special finds from travel or thrifting or gifts from friends. The centerpiece is the welcoming communal table where laughter and conversation mingle over well crafted dishes. Strangers become friends, and food and drink brings you together. It is a community space, a space that welcomes all.
