Some of our favorite Martha’s Vineyard experiences are seasonless, like Polly Hill Arboretum. Knowing that this summer is going look a little different for our visitors and islanders alike, it’s nice to know some things stay constant. It’s a delightful adventure WE LOVE MV – The Polly Hill Arboretum
We’re highlighting our local businesses and island lifestyle in our new support-the-island drive we’re calling We Love MV.
Tucked away in West Tisbury off State Road, the 70-acre arboretum is centered around one of the oldest, historic farmsteads on Martha’s Vineyard, which eventually became the island home of the late Polly Hill and her husband.
WE LOVE MV – The Polly Hill Arboretum Experience
Once you pass the welcome building, you immediately find yourself surrounded by the splendor of incredible trees and plants. Many are rare species, and exotic plants from other parts of the world.
Being surrounded by such natural beauty is not only a treat for the eyes, but there is something very calming about the space. As you meander through the paths, vacillating between trees, open fields and flowers, you feel connected to this special place.
WE LOVE MV – The Polly Hill Arboretum Exploring The Grounds
One of our favorite areas of Polly Hill is Polly’s Playpen. This is a small fenced-in area (to keep deer out) that has a number of Polly’s personal favorites. I have to say that this sanctuary offers wonderful sights, scents, and of course, sounds. In addition to all of the beautiful plants, there are plenty of birds chirping away in the trees.
This is one of the best times to visit Polly Hill. Spring has sprung here, and the colors of the flowers are stunning. Bright pinks, reds, yellows and more offer a feast for people of all ages.
Not only can you enjoy walking through the property, but you can picnic there as well. There are picnic tables available. However, we have a favorite spot. There is a barn on the property that is often warmed by the sun in its location. Here, it’s nice to enjoy a snack or just close your eyes and be lost in the moment.
Also, don’t forget to find the popular Monkey Puzzle Trees!
