Sometimes when there is a serious stretch of grey, I mean days of rain and no sun, what’s a girl to do to lift her spirits? Get flowers of course! Bring a little Spring into the house. One of my favorite flowers, especially during these months are tulips, and lucky for me Morrice Florist has Tulip Tuesdays.
Tulip Tuesdays? I’m sure you’ve seen their bright and cheerful sign for this as you’ve driven by on State Road. On this special day of the week, you can get a bunch of freshly delivered tulips for only $10.00. From red to white to pink to orange to yellow — any bunch or two will guarantee to brighten your spirits.
However, I do have to let you know that yellow is the most popular color and is the first to be sold out. So, you’ll want to go to Morrice Florist early in the day. Sadly, I wanted yellow, since it’s the most Spring-like to me, but I went at the end of the day. So, you can bet that I’ll be there early next time
I grabbed a big bunch of red tulips, and put them on my kitchen table, so I can enjoy them morning, noon, and night. I love how they brighten up the room and bring a smile to my face.
I have to say this very well may be the best thing I bought all week. Well, I do love those Lofthouse frosted sugar cookies from Stop & Shop too (the ones with the sprinkles you can find by the deli), but I think the flowers take the cake.
I have been buying tulips on Tulip Tuesday for years, and realized that I didn’t even remember when it started. So, I asked Morrice Florist owner, Kim O’Callaghan, when this clever little way to chase away the grey began. By the way, Kim is the third-generation to own the shop.
She took it over in 2005, and wanted to have a little more fun with her customers. She tried a number of different things, but when she introduced Tulip Tuesdays in 2008, she had a winner.
Not sure if it was the play on words or because, people, like me, needed something to cheer them up a bit during the Winter months, but she was selling out of tulips. Now, people look forward to Tulip Tuesday which begins after Christmas and continues until the end of April.
So, now you know that I like tulips, but what type of flower does a woman who has been around flowers her whole life like? Lilacs. Kim’s favorite flowers are lilacs. For her, she loves that it’s a flower that only grows well in the wild. They’re hard to get commercially and the smell brings her back to her childhood. I guess sometimes it is the simple things in life that make us the most happy.
Another interesting tidbit about Morrice Florist is what influenced it’s new color scheme. Kim fell in love with a picture of a floral shop in England. With that image in mind, she made her shop look like a whole new place. It is the first time there have been any changes made for a long time. Amazing what a little inspiration can do for you. Hmmmm, makes me think that there’s really no reason for me not to paint my living room.
Now that you know a little more about Tulip Tuesdays, perhaps you’ll stop by and grab a bunch or two and brighten up your home or office or perhaps surprise a friend with a little treat. Also, I should mention that Morrice Florist was voted Best of the Vineyard, Florist by Islanders for Martha’s Vineyard Magazine.
