If you’ve ever met the brothers behind Smooth Moves, Zared and Evan Shai, you know that they are guys that know how to have fun. Their newest endeavor, Backyard Taco, definitely emulates that vibe.

Located right next to Smooth Moves on Winter Street, you might be surprised at all you’ll find in this little space. The brothers redid the entire space inside — new kitchen, new bathroom, added bar, and more.

They have really optimized seating options. There’s a “backyard” patio with an eclectic collection of patio furniture that makes for an inviting space, and looks even more amazing at night.

The front deck has been expand and offers more seating which is very inviting, and definitely adds to the fun fact on Winter Street. Can’t you see yourself here, during the cooler September nights, munching on a taco or two? I know I can.

It’s what I would call a taco joint — fun, casual, inviting, like your backyard.  Something a little different for downtown Edgartown.

Taco Time

The menu is simple and affordable. Tacos are sold singles and range in price from $4 – $5. There are a number to choose from, including fish, chicken, steak, and get this…..eggplant!

Backyard Taco

Of course I had to get an eggplant taco. I’ve never heard of such a thing and I have to tell you it was so good – perfectly cooked, piled high with homemade guacamole, salsa verde and sour cream. This will make you happy to get your veggies!

Also, I had the steak, made with Evan’s special marinade. Once again you gotta have the guac and sour cream and the picked onions. The color, the flavor and those incredible tortilla shells – I got the sweet potato.

All tacos are served on house-made tortilla shells which makes all the difference in the flavor and quality of the taco. You can choose between corn or sweet potato. I was lucky enough to catch Josh in the action, making a fresh batch of shells. The recipe was developed by Evan and Zared. Through trial and error, they’ve found their perfection.

Zared says that people buy one, just to try it, then come back for a second, third and even fourth. People like to try the different types. They’re affordable and fun to mix and match.

Everything is made by them, the salsa verde, the guac, the marinade for the meats, all them, it’s a true family affair. This dynamic duo, along with the help of their mom and dad, are having fun with this.

When they started talking with the landlord last year about the space, they knew they wanted to open a taco spot. Tacos are fun, the colors, the flavor. You can do so much with them. Don’t be surprised if you see a number of different tacos over the course of the next couple of months. Evan is pretty creative and likes to experiment.

Zared & EvanWhat goes well with tacos? Why a beverage of course, and at Backyard Tacos, you’ll find a full bar. You can have beer, wine, margaritas and more, all good additions to tacos.

Backyard Tacos will be open at least through Columbus Day. They’re open daily from 2:00 p.m. to late – 12:00 a.m. Now you know where to get your food fix in Edgartown after hours.

Author’s Note: I have to mention Zared and Evan’s Dad, Raphael Shai, – he is their inspiration, their rock. With his help, they have been able to achieve their dreams.

Backyard Tacos Facebook page is coming soon. Their grand opening party is happening this weekend (think of tacos after OB fireworks), but don’t forget to “Like” Point B Realty on Facebook, and follow us on Twitter, Linked In, Google+, Pinterest and Youtube.
