Enjoying a Long Holiday Weekend on Martha’s Vineyard

We’ve survived the first half of January!  A much deserved long weekend is finally here. With the three-day holiday, there are lots of opportunities to enjoy time on Martha’s Vineyard and the celebrate the importance of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

Oscar Worthy

Le Havre Movie Poster

Feeling the Oscar Buzz a little early with the Golden Globes happening this Sunday night? Well, you are in luck. The Martha’s Vineyard Film Society is presenting “Le Havre”, a 2012 Oscar nominee for Best Foreign Film, Saturday night, January 14, at the Katherine Cornell Theatre in Vineyard Haven. I must warn you that the film is in French with English subtitles which I happen to enjoy, though not for everyone.  This particular film highlights the kindness of humanity with a lot of French dry humor which I find to be quite funny. If you watch the trailer that was released for the US, your interest will most certainly be piqued.

Remembering Dr. Marthin Luther King Jr.

Honoring Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

To honor Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., the United Methodist Church of MV will be featuring readings from his sermons and other writings this Sunday at 10am at Trinity Church in Oak Bluffs. Dr. King was a man who had such a profound impact on our nation, and his words continue to move and motivate us today.

A Great Weekend to Shop Vineyard Haven

Rainy Day Vineyard Haven
Stop by Rainy Day this weekend for some great shopping

The long weekend offers many opportunities for people to do some great shopping, especially in Vineyard Haven. Beadniks is having their once a year weekend sale. The whole store is on sale. This presents a great opportunity for all of us who like or would like to make their own jewelry. It is definitely worth checking out.  There selection of beads is one of the best I have ever seen.  Also, Rainy Day is featuring a sale with markdowns in every department (50% off toys & jewelry). I have to also mention that Midnight Farm is having what they are calling a “Gigantic Winter Sale” which sounds like there is some fun to be had.  Happy shopping!

Farm Chores at The FARM Institute

Visit The FARM Institute this Monday
The "Belties" on the farm

The event that really caught my eye for this weekend is the Open House and Chores at the FARM Institute, in Edgartown, this Monday, January 16 at 9am. Start your day off your day off on helping with farm chores including feeding the sheep and cows, gathering eggs, and more. Pre-registration is required, and to make the morning even better, breakfast is included! Being that The FARM Institute is a working farm, this means breakfast includes farm fresh eggs, meats, and veggies. What a great fun and memorable way to spend the morning.  I can imagine there will be some amazing photo opportunities for those who participate.
