Main Street’s Mini Park just got BASS FEVOR! The Edgartown Board of Trade has just launched the second annual Bass In the Grass Fundraiser and this year’s fish are quite incredible.
The Bass in the Grass is in honor of the Martha’s Vineyard Striped Bass & Bluefish Derby. The initiative not only adds to the fun of the Derby, but it also raises money for local artists and the Derby Scholarship Fund, which provides scholarships to qualified Vineyard students.
Bass in the Grass
Each fish is sponsored by a business. The business in essence “buys” the fish, and has it painted. The businesses in turn find a local artist to create their Bass in the Grass.
Make a trip to Main Street and take the time to visit Bass in the Grass. Each bass is so unique. You are bound to find a favorite! Also, there are so many people, Islanders and visitors alike who get to enjoy this combination of the Derby and local artists. It really is a great addition to the town.
Bass In The Grass – Point B Artist + Bass
For the second year in a row, Point B Realty has sponsored one with Jasmine Thompson of Jazen’s Art Studio in Oak Bluffs. This year, Jasmine created an idyllic summer day of sailing on the Vineyard. Bright colors and bold strokes lend to the beauty of this year’s Bass. We can’t wait to see how our bass does this year!
Each artist has a different vision for their fish, and the school in the Mini Park is quite diverse. In addition to the attraction to have one because they are beautiful pieces of art, there are a number of very well known, established artists participating including Terry Crimmen, Traeger di Pietro (who did three), Rachael Cassiani, John C. Traynor, Margot Datz and more!
With almost 40 entries, from whimsical to collector’s items, there is bound to be at least one that gets its hooks in you! Each one really has its own personality.
If you like Lily Pulitzer (Charlote Munyard), or if you’re a Red Sox fan (M-C Lamarre), or classic Island scenes, you are in luck. There are fish designed with nails (Evan Shai), deconstructed Bass (Zared Shai), one that is coated in metal (Leah Fraumeni) and what is sure to be the crowd pleaser, Chilmark artist, Jay Lagerman’s signature figure with a bass!
Bass in the Grass really is a celebration of art and the derby!
Bass in the Grass is not only a fun way to add art to the Derby, but as mentioned before, it’s also a fundraiser. If you go to Bass in the Grass MV website, you will find an auction in progress. Each fish is being auctioned off to the highest bidder – a portion of the funds goes to the Derby Scholarship and a portion goes to the artist who designed the fish.
The Bass are up for auction from September 20th – October 20th (the duration of the Derby). You can place your bid through the online auction site, Bidding For Good, click here to find out more or bid today! Happy Bidding!
