The well-known Island institution has opened its newest spot in the space formerly home to Mikado and Cardboard Box, and we think it’s one of the best uses of this restaurant space yet. Black Dog Pub - First Light Favorites
When writing about the pub, I knew I had to start with breakfast—what the Black Dog calls First Light Favorites. As an Oak Bluffs resident, it had been a long time since I’d enjoyed a full-service breakfast in town, especially since the closing of Linda Jean’s. My son was equally excited about the prospect of a proper breakfast and happily joined me for the first taste of the Black Dog Pub.
We were greeted by the most wonderful team, including manager Nick Harding, who immediately made us feel welcome. The restaurant has a relaxed, easygoing vibe that feels just right for Oak Bluffs. Since it was a beautiful summer morning, we asked to sit outside on the porch, where we could enjoy our breakfast while taking in the sights and sounds of Circuit Avenue.
The breakfast menu is so good! You’ll find a few Black Dog Tavern classics, including favorites like the Woofer Breakfast Sandwich and the Happy Heff, just to name a couple. But make no mistake—the Black Dog Pub is very much its own place, with a menu and personality all its own.
Let’s talk about the Pub Breakfast Boards, which are absolutely perfect for sharing, especially if you’re dining with a group. Catching a morning ferry? Grab a board to enjoy before you go! We sampled The Whole Shebang, loaded with fresh biscuits, eggs, sausage, fried and scrambled eggs, and more. It was AMAZING!
And that’s just the beginning. There are several boards to choose from, including a Pancake Board piled high with pancakes and all the toppings you could want. They’re fun, generous, and pretty awesome all the way around—and definitely something I’ll be ordering again.
My son went with the Chocolate Chip Pancakes, his all-time favorite Black Dog breakfast item. I decided to try something unique to the Pub: the Big Patties Breakfast. And let me tell you, this is quite the dish! It comes loaded with hash brown patties, a cheddar and egg scramble, roasted tomato, avocado, Sriracha aioli, and bacon. Be sure to come hungry when you order this one! It’s hearty, packed with flavor, and definitely not your average breakfast. I absolutely loved it.
And in addition to the great menu, we have to talk about the Mimosa Flight! Yes, this is absolutely a thing at the Pub. You can enjoy a rotating selection of four flavors, making it the ultimate add-on to your breakfast experience. I actually had a mimosa flight on vacation earlier this year and thought it was such a brilliant—and fun—way to make breakfast feel a little more special. There’s a Martini Flight too, although it was definitely a little too early in the day for us to contemplate that one!
It was so great to have breakfast right on Circuit Avenue. There’s something special about starting the day in the heart of Oak Bluffs, watching the Island wake up around you while enjoying a delicious meal. The Black Dog Pub has quickly become a new Cramer Family Favorite, and I’m already looking forward to our next breakfast!
Lunch & Dinner At The Black Dog Pub
The Pub Boards aren’t just for breakfast—they’re also available at lunch, and there are some seriously tempting options. The Pretzel Board immediately caught my attention and sounds like the perfect thing to share. It comes loaded with hot dog-stuffed pretzels, pretzel bites, cinnamon sugar pretzels, and cheese-stuffed pretzels, served with beer cheese, mustard-ketchup aioli, Black Dog beer whole-grain mustard, and pickles. That’s a whole lot of pretzel goodness!
If a board isn’t calling your name, there are plenty of great sandwich and salad options on the lunch menu too. With such a variety of choices, the Black Dog Pub really does have something for everyone—whether you’re grabbing a quick bite, meeting friends for lunch, or settling in for a leisurely meal on the porch.
For dinner, the fun continues with Pub Flights. Designed for sharing, these flights bring together some of the Pub’s favorite combinations—from lobster rolls and sliders to house-made dips. They’re perfect for the table, whether you’re looking for a starter to share or want to make a meal out of it. It’s a fun and delicious way to kick off dinner!
And the dinner menu? There are so many options. Think lobster risotto, roast chicken, braised short ribs, and plenty more. It’s a tavern-style menu with a coastal twist, and just like breakfast and lunch, there really is something for everyone in your party.
What I especially love about the Black Dog Pub is that it feels casual and approachable, but the menu is anything but ordinary. There’s plenty to inspire you to try something new, whether you’re grabbing a bite with the family, meeting friends, or settling in for a full dinner on Circuit Avenue.
And oh, let’s not forget the handcrafted cocktails! Nick the bartender makes his own fresh juices and has put together a creative cocktail menu that is just as fun as the food. The Spiked Pub Lemonades sound like the perfect summer cocktail—and you get to create your own! Start with fresh lemonade, choose your favorite spirit, like gin or tequila, and then pick a fruit flavor such as pineapple, mango, or watermelon. Mix it all together and voilà—you’ve created your own new favorite summer cocktail.

Fall At The Pub
Come fall, you’re going to want to visit the Pub even more. With big TVs ready for football, seasonal specials, trivia, and live music on the calendar, the Black Dog Pub is shaping up to be a lively new gathering spot on Circuit Avenue. It’s the kind of place that can keep Oak Bluffs buzzing well beyond the summer season—and we think that’s a very good thing.
