Sip, Snack, Repeat: Highlands General Brings Fresh Flavor To Oak Bluffs

Nothing says spring on Martha’s Vineyard like the debut of a new foodie destination, and what a treat we've just gotten, as Highlands General opened its doors at the end of March. Located on Circuit Avenue in Oak Bluffs—taking over the former Linda Jean’s space—it’s exactly the kind of vibrant, year-round spot downtown has been missing. From breakfast sandwiches and lunch, to grab-and-go salads, snacks, sweet treats, and expertly crafted coffee, plus a curated selection of specialty goods, Highlands General is anything but “general”—it’s downright spectacular.

Sip, Snack, Repeat: Highlands General Brings Fresh Flavor To Oak Bluffs - The Bill of Fare

When you walk through the door, you may feel a nod to Nomans - the logo, the goodies, the music, the feel of the menu, the beepers for you food, and that's because Highlands is the newest endeavor of the folks behind Nomans, Aalia's, and Nancy's. Spacious with tables for dine-in and plenty of counter seating (I am a big fan of the seats in the window for people watching). It is welcoming and full of life and fun!

As you make your way to the counter—if you can pull your eyes away from the house-made cookies and gooey cinnamon rolls—you’ll find a menu that’s just as tempting. Classic breakfast staples like an egg sandwich ($8) and breakfast burrito ($10)  share the spotlight with Highlands signature dishes like grilled banana bread topped with whipped ricotta ($14) and walnut butter, or a hearty maple sausage hash with eggs ($15). With plenty of sides to mix and match, it’s easy to build your perfect meal—and even better, breakfast is served all day.

Starting at 11 AM, the lunch menu rolls out with something for every craving. Think healthy rice bowls with salmon, chicken, or rotisserie cauliflower ($14 - $15), along with a lineup of sandwiches ($12 - $15) and rotating specials. I went for the cauliflower melt—rotisserie cauliflower piled onto sourdough with cheddar, shredded lettuce, and creamy ranch—and wow, it delivered. Packed with flavor and perfectly satisfying… I may have finished every last bite.

Like coffee? Highlands has lots of coffee options. They offer Peace Coffee, and I can say that the drip coffee is nice and bold. The Maple Cream Latte is a big hit - a little sweet treat, there are so many drink options. From lemonade at the counter to the array available in the beverage cooler, no need to go thirsty in-town.

Pressed for time, you can order ahead, click here.or enjoy your food at Highlands. You can even do grab and go. There are fun salads, parfaits and more. I even saw a red velvet ice cream sandwich in the freezer. YUM!

Sip, Snack, Repeat: Highlands General Brings Fresh Flavor To Oak Bluffs - More About Highlands

In addition to its standout food and coffee, Highlands General also offers a thoughtfully curated collection of snacks, treats, and merchandise—perfect for a Vineyard beach day. Think easy, fun bites that you can grab and go. You may be right in the heart of downtown, but the beach is just steps away. Cool off at North Bluff Beach or the Inkwell, then head over for provisions to keep the day going. Planning a spontaneous picnic at Ocean Park? Highlands General has everything you need to make it effortless and delicious.

Wondering about the name? It’s a thoughtful nod to Oak Bluffs history. “The Highlands” refers to the storied neighborhood on East Chop. Known for its sweeping bluffs, Victorian-era charm, and roots as a beloved 19th-century summer retreat, the area also holds an important place in Martha’s Vineyard’s African American heritage. The name gives Highlands General a sense of place—grounded in tradition, yet fresh and inviting for a new generation.

Highlands General is open daily, 7:00 AM - 4:00 PM, year-round. Stop by often and enjoy Oak Bluffs' newest favorite foodie spot.
