Across the street from the Vineyard Haven post office, you will find the newly opened Sweet Bites. As the name might indicate, you will find an amazing and very different selection of sweet treats, but there’s more.
Owner, baker, Sonia DeStefani is no stranger to the restaurant/baking world on the Island. She and her husband Valerio are the owners of Bite on the Go. A very popular Brazilian restaurant next to the Shell gas station, also in Vineyard Haven.
Over the years, Sonia has become known for her incredible baked goods, and had more and more requests as Bite on the Go grew in popularity. There was no space for the baking she really wanted to do.
So, when the space became available for purchase where Beetlebung Coffee Shop used to be, an opportunity presented itself, and she has created quite the team, and quite the shop!
Sonia talked about the renovation made on the space. How it is all new inside and is really set up to make people comfortable, at home. And when you’re making everything in house, people want to stay and savor the experience.
Sweet Bites offers an array of amazing treats. Not just the usual cookies, cupcakes and cake, but we’re talking a serious assortment. From tiramisu and cakes ready to go, to several baked breads, cupcakes, meringues, to layered chocolate coconut cake to about a dozen truffles to choose from. There is something for everyone.
Sweet Bites has a strong nod to Brazilian cuisine, which is a nice addition. Though there are many sweets that cross all cultures, there are somethings that are done with a twist. The most popular sweets are the truffles.
There are so many to choose from, all made in-house. What’s interesting is that Sonia makes Brazilian truffles, Brigadeiros. These are truffles made with butter and condensed milk.
Totally healthy, but no seriously, they have a different flavor and texture. There’s a sweetness and specialness, and it just so happens that these truffles are small and easy to just pop in your mouth. I think at least two are necessary.
I happened to get a four pack which featured a Churro (caramel and cinnamon), Leite Ninho (coconut milk), Sprinled Belgium Chocolate Brigadeiro, and a Pistachio Brigadeiro. I have to say that the Pistachio Brigadeiro was my favorite. I really enjoyed the earthiness of the nuts and the sweetness, though all were delish in their own way.
Since this was for work, I thought surely a coffee would be a nice pairing. I asked Sonja what she thought would be best and she suggested a cappuccino. I should mention that you can get all sorts of specialty coffee drinks in addition to Jim’s Fair Trade coffee. The cappuccino was the perfect addition to balance out my Sweet Bites.
There’s also a selection of tea which is fun to explore. You get to smell the different teas, and choose exactly which one works for you.
If you need something more substantial than sweets alone, Sweet Bites has you covered. They feature an assortment of breakfast and lunch (maybe dinner) sandwiches to choose from. All of the breakfast sandwiches are popular. How about a Grilled 3 Cheese with Asiago, Cheddar, and Mozzarella on your choice of brioche, wheat, croissant, ciabatta, bagel or english muffin with the addition of eggs, avocado and bacon (it’s always good to customize). Sounds so good right!
For lunch, the Italian seems to be the fav. Well, ham, salami, prosciutto, provolone, and veggies with Italian dressing is always is a good combination. There are many different to choose from. Also, you’ll find some delicious hot soups available to take the chill alway.
Sweet Bites is open Monday through Saturday, 6:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. which allows you to grab breakfast, lunch, or dinner there, or to go. On Sundays, the hours are 6:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
Sweet Bites is a great option for custom cakes for all occasions and they even cater too — creating a menu tailored to your needs.
I should also mention that there is wifi and even two parking spots! And a noteworthy detail inside is that the tables and counters were custom made from wood from the Island for the space, an interesting detail and conversation piece for sure. One of my favorite new additions to the space is the custom cupcake and coffee fence — it’s adorable!!
