Ready for GLOW Kayaking

Owner Chick Stapleton was inspired to bring Glow Kayaking and Paddle Boarding to the Vineyard by a company who has something similar in Puerto Rico. She researched and found a company that would make kayaks, one and two-person, with clear bottoms and lights on the sides and paddle boards that are clear and have the lights build in.

When I got to ISK at Little Bridge in Oak Bluffs, it was still light out. Before we went out into the water, we were shown how to kayak and maneuver the boats. Then we dove right into the fun. Initially, when it was still light out, I was a little doubtful about how fun it would be, but once it turned dark, it all changed.

Beginning the adventure

I could not believe how much you could see. Our guide for the evening, Kenny (a Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School student), took us along the shore near Farm Neck. There we could see so many critters in the water. I am pretty sure I even saw a baby lobster – I know that is crazy!

It was a small group of us on the tour, and we were all oohing and ahhhing while we slowly paddled along the shores. There was so much to see in the water. I absolutely loved it. This is a fresh take on an old favorite activity.

Here fishy fishy

As we started making our way back towards Little Bridge, we came across a huge school of little fish that were jumping in the water. The fish actually jumped into our kayaks. It was hilarious! Getting them out of the kayak was fun too.

A memorable kayak experience

We decided to go under Little Bridge where the jumping fish continued. It was wild! Here, you could also see much larger fish swimming below you.

Looking at our group was fun too – glowing kayaks in the water make for a pretty interesting scene. Something you don’t see everyday.

The experience was certainly a memorable one, and I would highly recommend that if you like to kayak and you like maritime creatures, then this is a must for you. I have to take my kiddos out for this experience. I think I would also like to try the Glow Paddle Board. Leave it to the one and only Chick to make kayaking and paddle boarding even more fun!
