Island Happenings: August Welcomes Us With An Epic Week of Events – Martha’s Vineyard

SUNDAY, AUGUST 4th

Run for Fun – Join the Amity Island Running Club’s first 5k its hosting. Lace up those sneakers and run one of the most stunning race routes – Registration begins at 7:30 a.m. Fun Run begins at 8:45 a.m. 5K runners and walkers begin at 9 a.m. The race begins at the FARM Institute in Katama, and continues along Edgartown Bay Road, past South Beach and back along the bike path to the finish line at the FARM Institute.

Suspense in Chilmark – the Martha’s Vineyard Book Festivalis quite impressive this year, and if you are a fan of JOHN GRISHAM’s novels, then you are in luck! He is discussing his book The Reckoning with author and Summer resident, Amor Towles at the Chilmark Community Center, 9:30 a.m. There are other authors and writers speaking all throughout the day. If you make your way up Island, be sure to stop by the Chilmark Store for breakfast or a slice of pizza on the porch or consider dinner at the Chilmark Tavern (BYOB).

Island History – It’s the Opening day of Our Story – 400 Years of Wampanoag History. The exhibit displays some very early history of the 17th century that has essentially been unknown. At the opening enjoy this exceptional portrayal that involves Wampanoag and other Native people today and share in the stories of their ancestors. The Aquinnah Cultural Center, 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. Exhibit runs though September 8th.

MONDAY, AUGUST 5th

Lights, Camera Action – the 17th Annual Martha’s Vineyard African American Film Festival begins today, and has a full week of events, from yoga, to films, to dinners, and more, the line up is impressive.You will find some of the most outstanding feature, documentary and short films produced by and starring African Americans from across the world.

Island Art – Since 1956, Summer visitors and Islanders have been enjoying the All Island Art Show.You will find works from artists all over the Island displayed at the iconic Tabernacle. Come enjoy the artwork and even bring your own, 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

The Mooncusser Speakeasy Martha's Vineyard Museum

Martha’s Vineyard Speakeasy – The Mooncusser Speakeasy is happening for one night only. This FUN-raising event for the Martha’s Vineyard Museum is sure to raise some eyebrows. It will combine classic coattails of the twenties, scrumptious hors d’oeuvres, surrounded by a classic soundtrack making for an elegant celebration of the defiance of prohibition on the Vineyard, 6:30 p.m., Atria Restaurant, Edgartown.

TUESDAY AUGUST 6th

From Martha’s Vineyard to ParisAn Evening in Paris, join the Cottagers as they host their annual fashion show fundraiser. Enjoy a fun filled afternoon with a parade of fashion, lunch and music, 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at the PA Club in Oak Bluffs.

A Night at the Museum – Tuesday nights are FREE at the new Martha’s Vineyard Museum. Stroll through all the exhibits, check out the Fresnel lens & bask in the glow of Island history. You can even get dinner. The Art Cliff Food Truck is there serving up delicious food. A great activity for the family, but be sure to bring cash for the food truck, 5:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., Vineyard Haven.

A Good LaughCamp Jabberwocky is hosting a performance of the classic Les Mis. This is a family friendly event that is sure to make you laugh and cry, family friendly, with ice cream afterwards, 7:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., Vineyard Haven.

WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 7th

Among friends – Imagine Yoga with the iconic statues at the Field Gallery, now know that it can happen with Yoga in the Field with Rachel Elion Baird. Experience full body breathing and asana postures in the beautiful Field garden Bring a mat or towel. Classes are weather dependent, 8:00 a.m. to 9:00 a.m., West Tisbury.

Backyard Bash In Chilmark – Each year, the Chilmark Fire Department host the their Backyard Bash. This is always an entertaining event! It’s a family friendly evening filled with food, live music, a silent auction and more, Chilmark Community Center, 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.

Vineyard Trust

Music in the Village – Bring your blanket to the beautiful lawn of The Vineyard Trust’s The Carnegie and enjoy live Music. You’re so close to downtown Edgartown. Head to town after to get a bite to eat or perhaps some ice cream, 6:00p.m. to 7:00 p.m., Edgartown. 

THURSDAY, AUGUST 8th

*Pop-Up at 29 – This is Point B’s local artists series! This week at Pop Up @ 29 we are featuring the beautiful handmade jewelry of H. Falk Designs and the Island inspired body products of Blue Wave Body Co., 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., 29 Winter Street, Edgartown, 774.563.0550.

Blooming Fun – Going Emily Coulter from Morrice Florist in the bucolic setting of The Grey Barn for an afternoon of learning the art of flower arranging with farm flowers while enjoying a Grey Barn cheese tasting, 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.

Music on the Square – After you visit Pop Up @ 29, head to see our friends at the Eisenhauer Gallery. Here, you will find a featured artist and the music of The Dukes of Circuit Avenue. This is lively spot in Edgartown, 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.

FRIDAY, AUGUST 9th

An Island Legend – Come meet noted fisherwoman, Janet Messino at her booksigning, Casting Into the Light, at the Chilmark Gallery. It took Janet many years to become a leader in the fishing community in the male dominated field on the Island. She really is a true Island character, 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.

Shark Sighing – The all new for Summer concert seriesBeach Road Weekend begins tonight with a showing of Jaws on the big screen, with John William’s score performed by the Cape Symphony. This is certain to be a memorable experience for Jaws fans of all ages, 6:30 p.m. Veterans Memorial Park, Vineyard Haven. Be sure to check out the entire musical line-up for Beach Road Weekend.

Dancing at Union Chapel – For 23 years, Built on Stilts has been delighting us! Built on Stilts Dance Festival is combination of professional performing artists from various cities and members of the Vineyard community. All shows are free and are family friendly, doors open at 7:30 p.m., performances begin at 8:00 p.m. 

SATURDAY, AUGUST 10th

Bee-autiful Start to Your Day – Discover the secret life of Martha’s Vineyard. Suit up in protective clothing, and tap into your inner bee keeper for an hour at Ginny Bee Honey Farms, for ages 8 and up, Norton Farm Stand, Oak Bluffs.

A Morning in Aquinnah – You’ll find pottery, wampum, jewelry, clothing, paintings, honey, baked goods, and more at the Aquinnah Artisans Fair, 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., Aquinnah Town Hall.

All That Jazz – For the 9th season, Jazz on the Vineyard is hosting its benefit concert for the organization of Student Achievement Through Opportunity. Enjoy the music of the multi-Grammy award artist Lalah Hathaway for this popular event, 6:00 p.m., at the Tabernacle.
