The Katama General Store has always been a great place to stop — it’s the last place heading out South Beach and the first place when heading home, and it’s got something for everyone. This year, there is a new chef, great gourmet to go and takeaway, and so much more. Walking through those red doors leads you to a happy place!
The Katama General Store is well stocked with provisions. Yes, you can get some staples, but they are definitely all about fun. Around every corner is something cool and different. I like wandering around, exploring all of owner Jackie Korell’s clever finds. From microfiber towels that dry in a snap, to truffle potato chips, to witty coffee mugs, you will find something here to covet.
Katama General Store: New Chef, Great Food
In addition to fun things, the FOOD is amazing. Chef Charlie Granquist joined the Katam General Store kitchen last year. Charlie has an incredible resume. Hailing from Brooklyn, he has worked at a number of notable restaurants over the last two decades, including the Savoy and Blue Hill.
Farm to Table has been a part of his career long before it was a trend. So, as you can imagine he is bringing this to the store’s kitchen. And luckily the Vineyard has so many resources for fresh local food.
Katama General Store: Chef Charlie Granquist Creations
Charlie is known for his flavor combinations. He takes the classics and adds his own twist. For breakfast, try the KGS Egg Sandwich. This has what you need to get your day started, eggs, cheddar cheese, heirloom tomato, and baby kale on an English muffin.
For lunch try The Shroom – made with shiitake mushrooms from MV Mycological, pickled red cabbage, housemade ricotta, with a drizzle of honey on housemade focaccia. This is a delicious, special sandwich. The color alone is enough to excite you, and one bite you’ll be hooked!
Think all lobster rolls are the same? No way! Here, the Lobster Roll is served on a brioche bun, with Charlie’s BROWN BUTTER mayo and topped with fresh herbs. In early Summer, you’ll find fresh chives from the garden behind the store. This is a lobster roll to savor on that fabulous porch that wraps around the store.
It’s not just food togo, it’s thoughtful takeaway. The food is prepared with intention and a lot of thought has gone into the menu. Charlie and his team have a level of commitment that shines through with each item.
Katama General Store: Dinners To Go
You will also find more prepared foods in addition to made to order especially for dinner. Charlie makes a mean roast chicken that comes with potatoes that is the perfect answer for dinner after a long, fun day at the beach. It’s such an easy, convenient, delicious way to continue the night.
Katama General Store – New Craft Beers, Drinks, Wines
In addition to pantry items, fun items, and great food, you will find well stocked beverage coolers. Not just regular ole run of the mill beverages, but a selection of small batch drinks from craft beverage makers. One current store favorite is Element Shrub & Club line of bottled drinks. The Cranberry Hibiscus is so delicious, and I bet the Honeydrew Jalpeno would pair well with tequila.
There is also a carefully curated selection of beers and wine. For the beer, there’s quite the selection of craft beers to choose from, and you get to create your own six pack. This way, there’s a beer style for everyone in your group.
For all you Summer Water Rose fans, there are now Summer Water “droplets,” cute little bottles. These are just adorable and perfect for the beach! See, there are always fun things to find here.
A visit to the Katama General Store is always fun. Jackie and Doug, the owners, put a lot of effort into making this place special. It’s more than a store, it’s an experience!
