Susie has been involved with the Red Stocking Fund on and off for 20 years and is currently the co-chair along with friend Sandy Joyce. It is almost a full-time job from October until after the Christmas week, but for Susie, this is a labor of love. Knowing that her dedication and work has such a big impact on so many children and families keeps her motivated!

The Red Stocking Fund is a completely volunteer run, non-profit organization that provides food and clothing for families in need for the holidays. Additionally, they provide food when possible through the winters on Martha’s Vineyard. They do not buy toys, but depend totally upon the donation of toys for kids, newborn to 14 years old.

The Red Stocking Fund has become a foundation for creating a holiday experience on the Island. Hundreds of people have benefited from the work of Susie and other volunteers and the generosity of supporters.

Many people believe that Martha’s Vineyard is a very wealthy place, and we do have a number of people who spend time here who are well to do. However, the year-round population of Dukes County is one of the poorest of the Commonwealth.

It is very wonderful but expensive to live on Martha’s Vineyard year-round. Raising a family here can provide even more of a financial challenge. Red Stocking Fund is a beacon of hope for many Island families during the holidays here, and has been for many decades.

With donations made throughout the year, they purchase basic necessities for the families like hats, mittens, socks, and other clothing items.

However, it wouldn’t be Christmas for the kiddos without toys! People or businesses can sponsor a child (children). Red Stocking Fund provides you with a wish list for the child. We sponsored a brother and sister last year. It was really fun to work together as a team to fulfill their list, and know that they would have a wonderful Christmas!

We are so grateful for Islanders like Susie who dedicate so much to make others happy. She is one of the many that make this community so magical! Thank you for recognizing her efforts! We are so proud!

If you have questions and want to sponsor or help this year, you can email the Red Stocking Fund at redstockingfund@gmail.com. Financial donations can be made any time of year and mailed to The Red Stocking Fund, Box 600, Edgartown MA 02539.

***Giving back is a very important part of Point B Realty. In June, founder/owner Wendy Harman received the Good Neighbor Award from the Cape Cod & Islands Association of Realtors® in recognition of her work with the Martha’s Vineyard Boys & Girls Club with the Martha’s Vineyard Teddy Bear Suite. This was the first time the group had given this award. Click here to read more.
