Husband and wife team, Lisa and Winston Christie bring 20 years of experience to the food scene on Martha’s Vineyard. They always knew they wanted to have their own place, their own restaurant to cook the food they love, and offer the customer service they are known for. However, when the pandemic hit, they questioned everything, but a little Vineyard magic happened.
Lisa’s friend had found out that the space next to Our Market in Oak Bluffs was available for lease, and she had looked at it as a possible location for her business, but decided against it. She let Lisa know about the opportunity. Lisa had no idea it was available. She and Winston looked at it, and the next day they knew that 1 East Chop Drive was going to be the home of their new business Winston’s Kitchen.
Winston was able to create his dream kitchen since the space was a blank slate, and because the space was only big for takeaway, the game plan was simple – make good food for good prices for everyone, year round. Since the husband and wife team have worked in the “business” for so long, they knew what they wanted and have had so much support in making their vision come true.
Location, Location, Location
You will find Winston’s kitchen next to Our Market, right on the harbor in Oak Bluffs. In addition to this great location for boaters and people in Oak Bluffs, there is parking. Yes, parking. You can park – grab your coffee and breakfast or lunch or dinner and be on your way. You can also grab additional goods if needed at Our Market.
Winston’s was a definite success with boaters this season, and there was a huge number of Islanders who sought them out to support this endeavor. It will be interesting to see what next year brings. Perhaps a dinghy selling food goods in the harbor? I love this idea that Lisa has. There was something similar in a harbor on Block Island. This would be a cool addition for sure.
A Little Caribbean, A Little Maine
Winston is from the Caribbean, and you will find a number of Caribbean inspired dishes on the menu. Some of the most popular are Winston’s specialty dishes – the Curry Chicken and the Jerk Chicken. People come in all day for these well known, delicious dishes. Also, the mashed potatoes have quite the following.
Lisa is from Maine. So you have a little Maine touches too. The coffee they offer is Benbow’s Coffee which Lisa used to enjoy when she was in Maine. They also get their whoopee pies from a baker in Maine and sandwich known as the “Maine Italian Sub” – ham and American cheese, onions, green peppers, tomato, greek olives and pickles, topped with olive oil, salt and pepper. This is a bit different from a traditional Italian Sub, and it’s fun to learn about different traditions.
Winston’s Kitchen
The menu has a variety of options – hot sandwiches, cold sandwiches, soups, dinners, breakfast, tons of desserts and more. For Winston and Lisa, it’s really about serving customers and friends the best food for the best price, and making them feel welcome when they step through the door.
Some of the top sellers that people come back for again and again in addition to Winston’s specialty items listed are the Fried Chicken Sandwich with their famous fried chicken, lettuce, tomato and special sauce ($9.99). The Italian Sub, sorry Lisa, is very popular too. This sub features ham, salami, capicola and mortadella, provolone, lettuce, tomato, green pepper, pickles, onion, Greek olives, oil & vinegar ($12.99). I have actually had a number of people tell me about how delicious this sub it. I should also mention that the subs are foot-long subs!
Breakfast favorites include Lisa’s coffee, both hot and iced, and the Breakfast Burrito, three scrambled eggs, bacon, tomatoes, peppers and scallions in a wrap. They have other breakfast sandwiches to choose from, and I have to mention that they get Cape Cod bagels delivered daily.
For me, it’s the Fried Chicken Sandwich for lunch. Oh and a side of fries too – because they are only $6.00!!! As expected, the sandwich was really good and sizable. The fries were great too, but my kids devoured most of those for me. They also said they want to have them again.
I got the Jerk Chicken for my husband to enjoy for dinner later since I was going to be out with friends He really enjoyed it. He also asked how we had missed this place all Summer. That’s a good question, but now we are in the know, and it will be part of our takeaway rotation. I need Matt to get the Italian Sub, maybe even the spicy version, so I can try it.
Stop by and say hi and give Winston’s Kitchen a try. Winstons is currently open 7:00 a.m. – 8:00 p.m. daily for takeout. I would definitely check in on hours as we move into the off-season. Click here to learn more.
