Fresh Bay Scallops enjoyed ocean to table belong on everyone’s Martha’s Vineyard Bucket List. They are a delightful and delectable seafood treat, only available each year during the Fall and Winter months.
They are the smaller, sweeter — and many would say tastier — cousin, to the more common, and larger Sea Scallop. When they appear at Martha’s Vineyard restaurants and fish markets, you know the autumn months have settled in.
Fresh Bay Scallops Hands-On Harvesting
Our own Social Media Manager Guinevere Cramer decided to leave the comfort of her restaurant seat, and go hands-on, for the ultimate Bay Scallop food experience.
With help from commercial oyster farmer Greg Martino, of Cottage City Oysters, Guinevere geared up and ventured out into the waters of Sengekontacket Pond in Oak Bluffs, to harvest her own fresh Bay Scallops. How did she make out? Take a look.
Along with the proper Bay Scallop fishing gear, you will need a shellfish license, issued from whatever town you’re going to be fishing in. If you’re going into the waters of Oak Bluffs, as Guinevere and Greg did, here’s the Oak Bluffs shellfish license link. If you’re looking for Martha’s Vineyard restaurants that serve fresh Bay Scallops, check Fall and Winter menus at Beach Road in Vineyard Haven and Rockfish or Alchemy in Edgartown. And like all fishing, every season is a little different.
Cottage City Oyster Farm Martha’s Vineyard
Our friends and colleagues, Cottage City Oyster farmer/brothers, Greg and Dan Martino, are doing some pretty incredible work of their own. We’ve told their story in the Vineyard Bucket List, and you see that story here. They also have a new video out chronicling their oyster farming here on Martha’s Vineyard as well.
