We’ve been keeping a close eye on MV Salads over the last year. Watching, wondering what it’s going to be like.
Located at the top of Circuit Avenue in Oak Bluffs, MV Salads is going to be a game changer for salad fans and the first of its kind on the Island.
Opening in May, I was able to meet with owner/manager Susanna Herlitz-Ferguson in the space to learn (still under construction) about this new addition to the food scene. Susanna is just lovely, and creating a new business on Martha’s Vineyard has been and continues to be quite the experience.
Suzanna, a mother of four, has always been behind the scenes for work. She was in consulting and rarely talked about her job. It was her goal that when her children were grown, she was going to do something completely different, on her own. MV Salads is all her vision.
She had been wondering exactly what she wanted to do, and thoughts drifted back to years ago. She began making this salad dressing that people loved. They said she should bottle it, sell it, share it with the world because it was that good.
She looked into manufacturing her dressing, but she wanted to do something more with it. When in the city, she would visit Sweet Green, a salad restaurant chain. There was always a line and the salads were a great option to have on the go.
Well, Sweet Green is not coming to Martha’s Vineyard, but lucky for us, MV Salads is. MV Salads is bringing the salad experience to the Island! Something we are missing!
By salad experience, I mean you get to create your own salad, made to order or try one of MV Salads’ signature salads. Each salad will feature local greens (think Morning Glory Farm) and as many other locally sourced products as possible, not to mention the fact that you can try Suzanna’s special salad dressing (great for a marinade too).
The idea of crafting my own salad sounds so luxurious! I think about how giddy I get when I make my own burrito at Chipotle, and now I can have that feeling here on the Island. This is very exciting!
As Suzanna’s ideas about MV Salads continued to grow and evolve, she came across another component to add to the space and it’s all about kindness.
On a side note, she was talking to a friend who mentioned that he spent his life looking for the prettiest, most out-going woman, but he realized when he met his wife, that he was looking for someone who was kind. Kind – it’s a magical word, and kindness is something we can all use a little more of in our lives.
Suzanne began incorporating kindness into the design. There will be a Kindness Zone at MV Salads where people can leave and take notes that have something kind written on them – a little way to add a little more kindness to your day and someone else’s, a “kindness exchange.”
In addition to craft salads, Suzanna, who has a fashion design background, is also curating a very special collection of merchandise to offer guests. Each item will have a connection to kindness, Martha’s Vineyard or of course salads. You will also be able to buy her MV Salad Dressing.
MV Salads’ logo has a beautiful coral-red and a lovely seagrass green – I imagine that we’ll see these colors with what she features. I was even lucky enough to get one of Suzanna’s signature fedoras that she will be selling with her signature colors.
In addition to salads and great finds, wait until you see some of the art she has for the space. Truly MV Salads is going to be a haven for the season. Suzanna is hoping that her kindness message has an impact on people. A little kindness goes a long way! And, keep an eye out for clever ways she adds kindness to the space.
MV Salads will be opening soon, and I’ll be back to have and share the Island’s Salad Experience, Thank you Suzanna for bringing a little goodness into our lives!
